Sick building syndrome
Sick building syndrome is a broad label that covers a range of symptoms thought to be triggered when the sufferer spends time in a particular building. Symptoms range from specific symptoms such as itchy eyes, skin rashes, and nasal allergy symptoms, to more vague symptoms such as fatigue, aches and pains, and sensitivity to odours.
The Symptoms
- Headache
- Eye, nose or throat irritation
- Dry cough
- Dry or itchy skin
- Dizziness and nausea
- Fatigue
- Sensitivity to odours
Causes
- Indoor air pollution (e.g. cigarette smoke)
- Artificial fragrance such as dryer sheets
- Poor or inappropriate lighting (including absence of or only limited access to natural sunlight
- Poor heating or ventilation
- Bad acoustics
- Poorly designed furnishings, furniture and equipment (e.g. computer monitors photocopiers etc.)
- Poor ergonomics
- Chemical or biological contamination
